The German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (EKONID)

We, the German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (EKONID), are part of the world-wide network of German Chambers Abroad (AHK) with 140 offices in 92 countries world-wide. In Indonesia, our organization represents the mutual interest in business relationships of German and Indonesian companies, organizations and institutions. 

To support German and Indonesian companies we offer a variety of services under the DEinternational brand - from general market information to services specially tailored to the respective company for a successful market entry, e.g. business partner search, support in legal questions and participation in trade fairs. 

Furthermore, on behalf of the German government we implement business-related projects to foster the bilateral business relations. Since 2016, we have been actively engaged in the initiative “Environmental Protection Made in Germany”. More information about our previous waste management projects can be found here. 

 

The initiative “Environmental Protection Made in Germany” 

The initiative “Environmental Protection Made in Germany” of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) aims to establish cooperation between innovative German environmental technology SMEs and potential partners in international markets. The advantages of modern and efficient technologies that conserve resources are not limited to furthering growth and innovation. They also contribute to raising environmental standards, spreading environmental knowledge and improving ecological foundations and living conditions at the local level in the long run. 

Through the initiative, support will be provided to needs-based projects that are tailored to specific necessities and that have an impact in their target regions, facilitating the necessary legal, political and administrative conditions for environmentally beneficial development and harnessing the economic and social potential of environmental technologies and resource efficiency. Through these support activities the initiative lays the foundation for sustainable partnerships. 

In the focus are especially the following sectors: 1) Water and wastewater management, 2) circular economy and resource management, 3) sustainable mobility solutions and 4) green hydrogen and fuel cell technology applications.  

Since 2016 the BMU and the Association of German Chambers of Commerce e.V. (DIHK) have been cooperating and utilizing the worldwide network of German Chambers Abroad (AHK). As part of the DIHK “Chambers for Greentech” project German environmental technology solutions and expertise are introduced to international markets through the AHK network. 

 

Objective of the project 

This EPR platform shall function as the primary source of information related to Indonesia’s efforts to establish an extended producer responsibility in the years to come. A well-functioning EPR would be a major milestone. While the Indonesian food & beverage industry and the hospitality sector are gearing up to comply with the tightening regulatory environment, business opportunities will arise for a wide range of companies and sectors. Collection and recycling infrastructure as well as new packaging solutions are the most obvious needs amongst many.

In order not to miss the right time to enter the market, continuous monitoring of developments is necessary. It is also necessary to familiarize yourself with the existing regulatory situation. For companies that do not follow developments continuously, the information situation is rather opaque. Necessary information cannot be found bundled in one place. As a result, the emerging (and in some cases already existing) business opportunities cannot be identified at an early stage. The project therefore aims to achieve the following primary objectives: 

1. Support the development of business opportunities through the provision of information from different sources that are related to circular economy in general and EPR in particular 

2. Introduction of German EPR expertise and experiences through our online-seminar series. For more information please click here 

3. Support the dialogue between the Indonesian government and local industry to implement the Waste Reduction Roadmap by conducting online seminars and providing relevant information on the portal 

 

 

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 

In accordance with the objectives of the BMU Export Initiative, this project is intended to develop and transfer knowledge on the subject of EPR. In addition, this project  also contributes to the achievement of various Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). 

• SDG 11 sets out the importance of sustainability in urban coexistence. In  11.6,  improved waste management is mentioned as a partial objective. This BMU project supports Indonesia's efforts in this regard and is intended to report on progress.  

• SDG 12 calls for sustainability in production and consumption. The recycling of residues is an important aspect of the circular economy. Sub-target  12.5  aims for a significant reduction in the amount of waste through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse. The Waste Reduction Roadmap of the Indonesian government pursues this goal and is therefore the focus of the project.  

• SDG 13 is committed to global climate protection. Any reduction in uncontrolled waste disposal reduces the unwanted escape of greenhouse gases.  13.A  stipulates that initiatives in the sense of the global Green Investment Fund are to be supported. Private sector projects to reduce waste and recycle residues support this goal. This BMU project is committed to increasing the involvement of the private sector.  

• SDG 14 deals with the protection of life under water.  14.1  states that by 2025 the amount of waste entering water bodies is to be drastically reduced. Indonesia has also committed itself to this. Improving its waste management and introducing an EPR would be important measures to make good on its commitments. This BMU project supports Indonesia’s efforts through its support for the identification of relevant projects and the promotion of Indonesia towards investors. 

• SDG 17 focuses on entering into global partnerships. Sub-goals  17.7 and 17.8 advocate the transfer of modern technologies to developing and emerging countries. This BMU project is intended to be a basis for initiating precisely such technology transfer projects. The initiation of partnerships between German technology providers and Indonesian users is the declared goal of the project. As part of the seminars, German experts will also share their experiences.
